Why We Moved Our Print Farm to Bambu Lab

The Case for Change

For several years we ran a mixed fleet of the previous generation of FDM printers. They did the job, and we learned a great deal about running high-volume production on them. But as order volumes grew and customer expectations for turnaround times tightened, the limitations became harder to work around.

Calibration was the biggest drain. Every machine needed regular manual bed levelling, first-layer tuning, and profile tweaking when filament batches changed. On a large farm, that overhead compounds quickly. A technician spending twenty minutes per machine across dozens of printers is time that could be spent on quality checking, packing, or customer support. The reject rate was also higher than we wanted: first-layer failures, ringing artefacts on detailed prints, and inconsistent adhesion all contributed to reprints that ate into margin and added days to lead times.

What Changed with Bambu Lab

The Bambu A1 runs at up to 350 mm/s with active vibration compensation built in. That combination matters more than the headline speed figure alone. Previous-generation printers running at high speeds produced ringing artefacts: the ghost lines and surface ripples that appear when a frame flexes under rapid directional changes. The A1's resonance compensation removes those artefacts without requiring manual input-shaping calibration. You get fast prints that look right.

Auto-bed levelling on the A1 is not a checkbox feature. It runs a full mesh compensation across the build surface before every print, which means first-layer adhesion is consistent job after job regardless of minor thermal changes or surface wear. Our reject rate for first-layer failures dropped significantly within the first month of running the new fleet.

The AMS (Automatic Material System) opened up reliable multi-colour production at scale. We can run up to four colours on a single job without manual filament swaps, which is directly relevant to our work with schools on personalised items and corporate clients requiring branded colour schemes. Colour matching is tighter because we are running consistent profiles rather than re-tuning per machine.

Remote monitoring via Bambu Handy and the cloud dashboard means our team can watch live camera feeds, check progress, and receive alerts without being physically present on the farm floor at every moment. That operational visibility lets us catch failures earlier and redeploy machines faster.

What This Means for Customers

The most direct benefit is turnaround time. Faster print speeds plus fewer reprints means orders move through production more quickly. For bulk orders — the school runs of 500 or 1,000 personalised items that make up a significant part of our workload — that speed advantage is material.

Consistent calibration also means colour matching is more reliable across a large batch. When a corporate client orders 200 branded pieces, they need uniformity. The Bambu fleet delivers that without the between-job drift we managed on the previous generation.

A Note on Files

Fast, well-calibrated printers do not fix poorly prepared files. We still recommend customers check their models carefully before uploading: support orientation, minimum wall thickness, and non-manifold geometry all affect print quality regardless of the hardware. Our auto-quoting system will flag obvious issues, and our team reviews files before production, but a well-prepared model will always produce a better result than the best printer working from a flawed input.
