Bambu Studio Colour Mixing: What the New Paint Tools Mean for Production Runs

What the New Tools Do

Bambu Studio's colour mixing and gradient paint tools let you apply smooth colour transitions directly to a model's surface within the slicer, without requiring the original CAD file to be split into separate bodies. You paint regions on the mesh, define the gradient start and end, and the slicer handles the filament change scheduling automatically.

Previously, multi-colour prints required either manual mesh splitting in CAD — separating the model into distinct bodies for each colour — or using the object colour assignment already built into Bambu Studio for whole-body swaps. The new tools add a third path: surface painting with gradients, which is especially useful for logos, text inlays, and graduated colour effects on organic shapes.

What It Means for Production

For a print farm running the AMS, colour mixing affects the purge volume and filament transition timing. A gradient transition requires more purge material between each colour change than a hard edge swap, because the transition zone is intentionally blended rather than cut cleanly. On a production run of 50 parts, that purge overhead adds up.

For customers, this translates to two things: gradient and mixing effects are available but carry a small material surcharge versus standard multi-colour, and not all filament pairings blend cleanly. PLA in similar colour families transitions well. Switching between very different pigment loads — say, black to white — still produces a longer purge zone and more visible transition artefacts.

The tools also work well for colour inlays on flat or gently curved surfaces: a logo printed in a contrasting colour without needing a separate STL file for the inlay body. That is genuinely useful for branded corporate pieces where the customer supplies a single file and needs a two-colour finish.

Practical Limits

The AMS supports four filament lanes. Any gradient or mixing effect is constrained to those four colours. Complex multi-colour gradients require careful profile planning — running out of lanes mid-print is not recoverable without a reprint.

File geometry matters. Gradient effects work best on surfaces with a clear directionality: top-to-bottom, front-to-back. On highly complex or concave surfaces, the painting tool can produce uneven transitions that look less intentional in the finished part.

We review all multi-colour files before production. If a gradient effect is going to produce poor results given the model geometry, we will flag it before the job runs rather than discovering it on the print bed.

If you want a gradient or mixed-colour effect, include a note in your order describing the intended transition — which surfaces, which direction, which colours. The more specific the brief, the more closely the finished part will match the intention. A reference image is always helpful.
